Joseph Baldacchino

Joseph Baldacchino is Senior Scholar at the Center for the Study of Statesmanship (CSS) at the Catholic University of America. He is Editor of the interdisciplinary academic journal Humanitas. He was co-founder and president of the National Humanities Institute from 1984 until its merger with CSS in 2017.  A magna cum laude graduate of Mount St. Mary’s University in 1970, Baldacchino served as editor of the Dorchester News in Cambridge, Maryland, in 1971 and 1972, followed by nearly a quarter of a century as associate editor of the national conservative weekly Human Events. In the latter capacity he addressed most aspects of national policy and politics but with particular emphasis on ethical and cultural issues and their relation to the U.S. Constitution.

Baldacchino earned an M.A. in political philosophy from the Catholic University of America in 1983. He is author of Economics and the Moral Order and, with others, Irving Babbitt in Our Time, as well as editor of Educating for Virtue. Baldacchino’s lectures on “American Constitutionalism and Its Implied View of Human Nature” and “The Ethical/Cultural Prerequisites for Social and Economic Harmony,” delivered at Beijing Normal University in 2012, were recently published in a book edited by Zhang Yuan entitled (in English translation) American Humanism: Tradition and Renewal. Baldacchino is a member and former vice president of the Academy of Philosophy and Letters. He serves on the board of directors of the Committee for the Republic and on the advisory board of the College of Liberal Arts at Mount St. Mary’s University.
